Digital Camera Information

Posted by Unknown On 9:15 AM

A still camera that records images in digital form. Unlike traditional film cameras that record a light image on film (analog), digital cameras record discrete numbers for storage on a flash memory card or optical disc. As with all digital devices, there is a fixed, maximum resolution and number of colors that can be represented. Images are transferred to the computer with a USB cable, a memory card or wireless. Digital video cameras (see camcorder) also use Fire Wire.
Digital Advantages
There are three distinct advantages of digital cameras over their analog counterparts. First, you can review the finished image immediately and erase the others. Second, you can take and print one picture without waiting to develop an entire roll of film. Finally, memory cards, the storage mechanism most widely used for "digital film," are reusable over and over.
Chips: The Camera's Film
Digital cameras record color images as intensities of red, green and blue, which are stored as variable (analog) charges on a CCD or CMOS image sensor chip. The charges are converted to digital and stored in flash memory chips on a memory card such as Compact Flash, SD or Memory Stick. Some still cameras use optical discs for storage instead of flash memory, and video cameras use tape, optical discs and hard disks (see DV).
The size of the CCD or CMOS chip determines the picture's resolution, but the analog-to-digital converter (ADC), which converts the charges to digital data, determines the color depth. In 2002, Foveae introduced a breakthrough in color accuracy with its X3 CMOS chip (see Bayer pattern and X3).
Digital video cameras use the same image sensing methods as still cameras, but in addition to storing the images digitally, they output NTSC video for playback on any TV. See flash memory, photo sharing site, photo editor, photo scanner, X3 and DSLR.
Major Features
For the major features and some caveats of digital cameras, see digital camera features. For camera recording quality designations, see digital camera record modes.

Applying the most recent security updates is a security best practice. Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 can make it easier to apply software updates to computers in your organization. However, there are some best practices to help prevent attackers from hijacking the software update infrastructure.

Security Best Practices

Do not change the default permissions on software update packages    By default, software update packages are set to allow administrators full control and users read access. Changing these permissions could allow an attacker to add, remove, or delete software updates.
Control access to the download location for software updates     The SMS Provider computer account and the user who will actually download the software updates to the download location both require write access to the download location. Restrict access to the download location to reduce the risk of attackers tampering with the software updates source files in the download location.
Use UTC for evaluating deployment times    If you use local time instead of UTC, users could potentially delay installation of software updates by changing the time zone on their computers.

The release of Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system is a week away, and consumers are in for a shock. Windows, used in one form or another for a generation, is getting a completely different look that will force users to learn new ways to get things done.
Microsoft is making a radical break with the past to stay relevant in a world where smartphones and tablets have eroded the three-decade dominance of the personal computer. Windows 8 is supposed to tie together Microsoft’s PC, tablet and phone software with one look. But judging by the reactions of some people who have tried the PC version, it’s a move that risks confusing and alienating customers.
Tony Roos, an American missionary in Paris, installed a free preview version of Windows 8 on his aging laptop to see if Microsoft’s new operating system would make the PC faster and more responsive. It didn’t, he said, and he quickly learned that working with the new software requires tossing out a lot of what he knows about Windows.
“It was very difficult to get used to,” he said. “I have an 8-year-old and a 10-year-old, and they never got used to it. They were like, ‘We’re just going to use Mom’s computer.’ ”
Windows 8 is the biggest revision of Microsoft Corp.’s operating system since it introduced Windows 95 amid great fanfare 17 years ago. Ultimately, Windows grew into a $14 billion a year business and helped make former Chief Executive Bill Gates the richest man in the world for a time. Now, due to smartphones and tablets, the personal computer industry is slumping. Computer companies are desperate for something that will get sales growing again. PC sales are expected to shrink this year for the first time since 2001, according to IHS iSuppli, a market research firm.
The question is whether the new version, which can be run on tablets and smartphones, along with the traditional PC, can satisfy the needs of both types of users.
“I am very worried that Microsoft may be about to shoot itself in the foot spectacularly,” said Michael Mace, the CEO of Silicon Valley software startup Cera Technology and a former Apple employee. Windows 8 is so different, he said, that many Windows users who aren’t technophiles will feel lost, he said.

iPad mini may be most expensive lower-end tablet

Posted by Unknown On 12:28 PM

The one remaining mystery surrounding the iPad mini is how much will it cost, but now, a new image on the web appears to answer that question.
German tech blogger Florian Schimanke has posted what looks like an inventory list of the various iPad mini models. And along with the various models, the list includes prices.

Retina display ... may be coming to the MacBook Pro 13" model.
According to the image, the iPad mini will be available in 16 different versions. It will come in both black and white and range in storage from as little as 8 gigabytes to as much as 64 GB. Additionally, the image indicates there will be versions of the device that can connect to mobile data networks.
The picture, which according to the blog comes from an anonymous informant, shows 8 GB versions of the iPad mini will go for $US320 ($312). But Gizmodo reports that the US price is likely to be $US249 ($242).
As it points out, Apple charges roughly the same figure in Europe for the third generation iPad as it does in America. It doesn't compensate for the foreign exchange difference.
As for the inventory list provided by the German blogger, the price goes up to €349 ($440) for the 16 GB model, €449 ($567) for the 32 GB device and €549 ($694) for a 64 GB version.
The mobile-connected versions of the iPad mini start at €349 for the 8 GB model, €449 for the 16 GB model, €549 for the 32 GB and €649 ($820) for the 64 GB versions of the device.
These prices are from an unofficial source, but if they are the price points Apple is looking at, it will have the most expensive lower-end tablet among the top players in the market.
By comparison, Amazon sells a 32 GB version of its 7-inch Kindle Fire HD tablet for $US249 and Google sells a 16 GB version of the 7-inch Nexus 7 for the same price.
The iPad mini is expected to feature a 7.85-inch screen, have an aluminium back cover, be relatively thin, come with two speakers and include Apple's new Lightning connector.
Meanwhile, a separate report suggests that the iPad mini may not be the only major new product the California company announces this month.
9 to 5 Mac's Mark Gurman says the tech giant also plans to announce a 13-inch MacBook Pro with a high-resolution Retina display, expanding the company's catalogue of Retina-enabled products. It already offers a 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display.
The device is rumoured to be announced next Tuesday, October 23 (US time), alongside the iPad mini.
The 13-inch laptop is expected to be thinner and lighter than its non-Retina counterparts, and it is also expected to be available in two versions, with one having a faster processor and more storage.
If Apple follows what they did with the 15-inch model, which came out earlier this year, then the 13-inch model is not likely to have an optical drive.
Analysts have been saying for quite some time that they expect a 13-inch Retina model. And now that it has been reported by Gurman, who was the first to report on the 15-inch Retina laptop rollout, it seems likely Apple will also deliver on the 13-inch version soon.

PC future murky as mobile devices advance

Posted by Unknown On 12:23 PM

A new report predicts worldwide sales of personal computers are bound for their first annual decline in 11 years.
The forecast issued by the research firm IHS iSuppli projects that nearly 349 million PCs will be shipped this year. That would be a 1 per cent decrease from nearly 353 million PC shipments last year.
Although small, the anticipated decline would be the first time that annual PC sales haven't grown since 2001.
PC makers began the year with hope that a new wave of lightweight laptops called ultrabooks would provide a sales lift. But the ultrabooks haven't been compelling enough to overcome the growing popularity of smartphones and tablet computers.

Those mobile devices are reducing the need for consumers and businesses to buy new PCs or replace older ones.
As the year winds down, the PC industry is now counting on an upcoming makeover of the Windows operating system to revive interest in desktop and laptop machines.
Windows 8 has been redesigned by Microsoft so it can power hybrid PCs that can be controlled by touching a display screen or relying on a keyboard and computer mouse.
The revamped operating system also works on tablet computers, including one that is being made by Microsoft. If the tablets running on Windows catch on, they threaten to siphon even more sales from PCs.
Machines running on Windows 8 are scheduled to go on sale October 26 from Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard, Samsung Electronics, Dell and others.

Windows 8: more than just a touch-up

Posted by Unknown On 12:19 PM
Radical changes, possibly the biggest to ever hit Windows PCs, are going to dramatically alter the status quo of computing this week.
That's when Microsoft formally ushers in the Windows 8 era. This fresh operating system represents such a departure for Windows that you're left with the impression that Microsoft wants to stomp out any distant memories of Windows Vista, Windows ME or other less flattering periods from Windows' past. Never mind that a lot of people, me included, like the most recent version, Windows 7.
Though you'll still find good use for your mouse and keyboard, Windows 8, at least for many of the new computers it will run on, is not only meant to be touch-capable, it all but begs you to get your fingerprints on it.
Microsoft has designed a unified operating system that works on tablets and traditional PCs and laptops. Despite twin versions, Windows 8 and Windows RT, Microsoft is taking a notably different, and perhaps riskier, course than rival Apple. Apple still markets separate operating systems for Macintosh computers (OS X Mountain Lion) and for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch (iOS 6), even though some features are common to both operating systems.

Here are some of the key questions leading up to the Windows 8 launch:
What does Windows 8 look like?
If you've seen a Windows Phone, you have a general sense of what the customisable new Start screens on Windows 8 will look like. The interface is built around dynamic rectangular tiles that reveal information in real time — the weather forecast, say, or tweets. You can click on these tiles or, depending on your system, touch them, to get at the underlying apps or programs. Windows 8 is pre-populated with apps for People, Messaging, Music, Photos, Mail, Video, Calendar and more.
The interface is attractive. It generally works smoothly with touch gestures, and slightly less so with mouse/track-pad equivalents. Swiping from the right edge of the screen to the left summons system commands called "charms". Swiping from the left to the right reveals thumbnails of open apps. Dragging an app to the bottom of the screen closes it (though some close by themselves if you don't use them for a while). And pinching in and out to zoom lets you take a gander at a convenient bird's-eye view of all the apps on your computer.
How will people embrace the change?
Time will tell. I suspect the interface could scare at least some PC users who have grown up with the more traditional Windows layout. Microsoft and its partners, however, are betting that people will find Windows 8 to be intuitive (as I did) — especially those accustomed to tapping and touching on smartphones and tablets.
Intel says the conventional wisdom may be that folks are reluctant to reach up and touch the screen. But Intel researchers found that people quickly adapted. Either way, expect a bit of a learning curve.
You can tap a Desktop tile to go back to a screen that resembles Windows 7 — minus the Windows Start menu. Sensing a competitive opportunity, Samsung, on its upcoming line of Windows 8 computers, will let folks download a Quick Starter feature that brings up a replica of the Start Menu and a toolbar. As always with a new operating system, it remains to be seen if Windows 8 will be bug-free at launch and whether all your existing peripherals will work.
What kind of new hardware is coming?
You'll see conventional desktops and clamshell laptops, of course. But the industry is taking advantage of the touch and slate-friendly nature of the operating system to produce several clever designs, including ones that turn notebooks or even desktops into removable tablets and vice versa. For example, you might mistake the Sony Vaio Tap 20 for an ordinary 20-inch all-in-one touch-screen computer. But it has a built-in battery that lets you fold it up and carry it around as an oversize tablet.
Lenovo's intriguing IdeaPad Yoga has four different modes; the screen can fold up to 360 degrees, letting you employ it as a regular laptop or as a tablet. You can stand it up to watch movies. Or fold it like a tent to peek at recipes when it's in the kitchen.
The usual suspects will have broad Windows 8 line-ups: Acer, Asus, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, Vizio. Intel says more than 40 new touch-capable, thin Windows 8 Ultrabooks will hit by year's end. With its own highly anticipated Surface tablets, Microsoft will not only compete against the iPad but also against some of the aforementioned hardware partners. Surface will start at $US499 for a version with 32 gigabytes of storage and climb an additional $US100 if you add an innovative keyboard cover.
Differences between Windows 8 and Windows RT?
Surface, among other machines, will have versions for Windows 8 and Windows RT. The latter was built with mobility in mind. It will run on ARM processors and deliver what is expected to be longer battery life. RT machines will feature built-in Mail, Calendar, Messaging, Photos and SkyDrive (Microsoft's cloud offering), as well as a pre-installed version of Office, containing Word, Excel and PowerPoint. But on an RT computer, you can only run the pre-installed apps or apps you fetch free or pay for in Microsoft's new Windows Store. And RT lacks the Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center.
You'll have to choose a Windows 8 computer to run the conventional desktop apps you may already own. But you can also purchase apps for Windows 8 in the Windows Store. Microsoft says there will be thousands at launch.
Upgrading existing hardware?
You can upgrade Windows XP, Vista or 7 computers. Microsoft is making available a compatibility assistant tool to help you determine which of your older programs may give you trouble. Of course, you'll want entirely new hardware to take advantage of all the latest touch capabilities.

Windows 8 unlikely to give PC stocks a boost

Posted by Unknown On 12:04 PM
7:13PM EDT October 18. 2012 - The latest version of Windows, Windows 8, is designed to put the world's No. 1 operating system on touch-based tablet computers. Investors, though, fear the software still won't give technology stocks a much-needed touch of oomph.
Windows 8, due to be released Oct. 26, is Microsoft's answer to the rise of the tablet. It's the first iteration of Windows designed to run well on tablets and low-cost and power-efficient computer chips. The question is whether Windows 8's adoption in tablets can happen fast enough to counteract flagging PC sales, says Andrew Lange, analyst at Morningstar.
Shares of companies that've made their fortunes on the personal computer, including Microsoft, Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Intel, have languished at best as investors shift their bets to companies dominating the technology behind tablet computers and smartphones. Late Thursday, Microsoft reported disappointing quarterly profit that was down 22% on weak PC demand, hurt in part by tablet sales. Shares of Microsoft fell more than 2% in after-hours trading.
"Tech investors have seen enough disruptions to recognize that the incumbents being disrupted can decline faster or worse than you think," says Steven Milunovich of UBS.
Given the importance of Windows in technology, though, investors are keenly bracing leading up to its release due to:
--Historical reactions to new versions of Windows. Given that 90% of the world's computers run Windows, any upgrades can be big events and have been a catalyst for stocks in the past. Shares of Dell soared nearly 49% in the 30 days after the release of Windows 2000 and Intel gained 22% in the month after Windows XP's release, which are among the biggest reactions to new operating systems.
--What it says about the competition. New operating systems from Microsoft have rarely faced so much stiff competition at the onset, says Betsy Van Hees of Wedbush Securities. Windows 8 makes Microsoft a viable competitor on tablets, but consumers already have enormous choice, she says. Apple has captured dominant share of the tablet market since it had no competition for months after the iPad was released. "This year is very different, in the number of choices the consumer has," she says.
--Battle over consumer technology spending. Companies, as is typical, will be slow to migrate to Windows 8 as they're satisfied with how Windows 7 operates and see little initial gain to a touch system, says Alex Gauna of JMP Securities. The challenge for Microsoft is to win back consumers, he says. While Windows 8 may fare well with companies over time, winning over consumers will be difficult, says Brian White of Topeka Capital.
Most likely, Windows 8 won't be a driver of PC demand until next year, and that's when the stock might get some lift, White says. Such delays are not unprecedented. Microsoft shares slid 2% a month after the release of Windows Vista, but a year later were up 33%.
"I don't think the game is lost for Microsoft," Gauna says. "Windows has the opportunity to get it right for 2013."

Free copy of Office 2013 -- or sub to Office 365 -- now comes with purchase of Office 2010

Microsoft on Friday launched an Office upgrade offer that gives customers who purchase the current Office 2010 a free copy of the upcoming Office 2013.
The deal, stuck with the official title of "Microsoft Office Pre-launch Offer," started Oct. 19 and ends April 30, 2013. Customers who buy a retail copy of Office 2010 for Windows or one of several stand-alone applications within that period can download a free copy of the corresponding version of Office 2013, or in some cases, choose a free one-year subscription to an Office 365 plan.
Although Microsoft has announced Office 2013, provided a preview of the new suite and named prices, it has not set a launch date. Most expect Office 2013, and the Office 365 plans that rely on it, to ship in late January or early February 2013.
The upgrade or Office 365 subscription will be available when Office 2013 debuts.
Microsoft regularly runs such deals for Office. In 2010, it kicked off a "technology guarantee" for buyers of Office 2007, giving them a free upgrade to Office 2010 for several months bracketing the latter's retail launch.
The difference this time is that Microsoft is giving customers options.
Buyers of Office Home & Student 2010, for example, can choose either a perpetual-licensed copy of Office Home & Student 2013 or a one-year subscription to Office 365 Home Premium, the plan that lets consumers install and run Office 2013 on up to five PCs or tablets in a household.
Those who purchase the business-grade Office Professional 2010, on the other hand, will be able to pick between Office Professional 2013 plus a three-month subscription to Office Small Business Premium, or a one-year subscription to Office 365 Home Premium.
Since Microsoft will not be upgrading Office for Mac anytime soon, buyers of that suite will receive a one-year subscription to Office 365 Home Premium. All Office 365 plans let subscribers install and run five copies of Office on Windows PCs or Macs in any combination.
Some caveats apply: While Office 2010 will run on Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 or even the upcoming Windows 8, Office 2013 works only on Windows 7 and Windows 8.
But the combination of the free deal and Microsoft's decision to raise prices for Office 2013 give customers a way to save money: Purchase a copy of Home & Student 2010, for instance, which Amazon currently discounts to $99.99, and later receive a free copy of Home & Student 2013 that will list for $139.99.
Customers must redeem the free offer no later than May 31, 2013.
Details about the upgrade offer, including a full list of eligible versions of Office 2010 and Office for Mac 2011, can be found on this Microsoft website, with even more information available on the offer's terms page.
